When Hard And Soft Collide

Not being a huge dub-step head, I may not be the ideal individual to review Bandish Projekt tracks. And yet, there’s something about the way that Bandish blends desi sounds – often soft and sultry ones – with hard hitting bassy beats that draws in the casual listener. I was hooked by their 2009 Badi Dheere remix from the film Ishqiya, and their remix of their own Waiting largely lives up to the promise of that track.

A harder hitting remix of the atmospheric original track from their 2009 release, Correct, the VIP remix takes a long time warming up. The tune slowly builds texture and groove until the unmistakably dubstep beat explodes, and three minutes into the track, 1995 Sarigama winner Sanjivani Bhelande’s soulful vocals are released over the electronic madness. If you like the kind of sonic juxtaposition for which Bandish is known, you’ll love this track.

We love it without being quite sure what to make of it. Too relaxed and melodic for play in most club settings, the track also comes too hard to imagine sitting around, relaxing at home, and putting it on. But with such expert blending of multiple musical traditions, we’re confident that you’ll find the right time and place to nod your head to this.
