The tenth Berlin based Border Movement residency saw Dhaka based producer, artist and curator Nafis aka The Black Box Project get selected to spend 2 months in Berlin.
Check out the video below for a glimpse into The Black Box Project’s experience. Filmed in Berlin and Dhaka and created by Petra Hermanova, this video embodies the passage of transition for the artist…
“I found music as the primer for expressions at an early age, excepting I didn’t posses natural talent nor have the patience. I had creative ideas which I vicariously expressed through others. After many years of this pursuit, I felt unfulfilled and decided to leave everything I built from scratch, and express myself, no matter how it is perceived. Being impatient to settle on a single idea however was not easy, and I found home in an evolving concept I call the “BlackBox” project – an amalgamation of personal experiences.
I don’t follow a genre or structure and rely solely on emotional triggers. Simply put, controlled chaos. All I do is talk about human feelings, as someone who keeps human connections in a lost & found box. It’s like method acting. Every conflict on the outside is just a collective outcome of the wars we fail to mitigate inside us.”
In 2016 we launched a new residency initiative called BMR to create meaningful and relevant opportunities for music makers from South Asia and Germany. Over the course of the last 3 years, BMR has invited 11 South Asian artists to Berlin for 2 months and have hosted 8 Berlin based artists in South Asian cities.
