New Delhi Mashup Massive
New Delhi Nuttah, a new collaboration between electro-desi beatsmith Nucleya, Menwhopause guitarist I. P. Singh and all around impresario Delhi Sultanate, has surprised us.
Really, it sounds like a set-up to a bad music nerd joke: a hard dubstep producer, an all-out rocker and a revolutionary ska n’ bass vocalist walk into a studio…
…and the results are anything but comic. In fact, the product of their collaboration is a finely crafted and well produced pop song, perhaps the last thing we would have expected from the trio. Singh’s guitar seems to have no trouble shifting over into reggae mode, setting a mellow, smoked-out base over which Nucleya layers the kind of muted but dubstep-inflected electronics that can be found across the contemporary British and American pop spectrum. Delhi Sultanate’s laid back flow provides a sing-along chorus and lyrics that continue to touch on political themes without delving overly deeply into the revolutionary stance that defines so much of his life and music. Mellow horns build and release, anchoring the sound firmly in the island tradition.
At this point, we don’t know whether we can expect more from the trio, or if this is a one-off collaboration. But our interest is piqued. These boys could go just about anywhere from here.
