The First Wave – Emerging Electronic Musicians Of Sri Lanka: Part Three

On Shamin’s Soundcloud, there are tracks ranging from dubstep to Metric (the rock band) remixes, There’s also the nifty little “Cold Space“ which warranted a second look. It has been a worthwhile one.

Today’s special: Organic dance music- The new way forward?

In the Studio w/ Sickflip (Sarvesh Srivastava)

Ok, perhaps not ‘organic’ in the true sense of the word, but this release is (out) bursting with live guitars- courtesy ‘RT’- Rohaan Talsania (not to mention super soulful), laid down tastefully all over a glitch-hop meets dubstep bed of dance music.

Although the horns (Tricky trap feat. Eskay) may not be everyone’s cup of chai, there are certain elements in here which distinctly fit into the Indian Dubstep/Electro wave. If you were digging on Dualist Inquiry at the NH7 Weekender, or can’t wait for Koan Sound to get to India, you’re going to want to listen up.

Ragasthan, Part Two – What Really Matters: The Music

For a review of the festival experience, see the first installment in our Ragasthan series.

I’ve got to give it to the organizers: it can’t be easy. Putting together a festival that hops genres as wildly as Ragasthan does while still keeping guests engaged involves a great deal of juggling. Perhaps aptly, Ragasthan chose to take the three-ring circus approach – rock, world, and electronic.

Chasing the Mirage – Ragasthan, Part One: Logistics

This post should be about something else.
It should be a post about the many musical acts – some brilliant and others less so – that graced the stages of Ragasthan. And that’s what it was supposed to be.

But then Ragasthan happened.

And now, the attendees seem to oscillate between judgments; was Ragasthan a miraculous accomplishment or an organizational disaster of epic proportions?

The First Wave – Emerging Electronic Musicians Of Sri Lanka: Part Two

Daffy Maestro, or Stro as they call him, is a bit of an enigma: Seemingly more prolific than his Sri Lankan counterparts, there is free flow to his music, an almost analog warmth that overawes the tinny 1-0-1-0 of the digital revolution. He has range too, from lo-fi noodling and ambient to (what our ancestors used to call) trip-hop.

The First Wave – Emerging Electronic Musicians Of Sri Lanka: Part One

Even before Christopher Columbus slid into America, the Map has been a wide one.

But ever since Les Paul devised the 4-track recorder, Charanjit Singh picked up the 303 and Al Gore invented the internet, the Map has been contracting—in a glistening 3-d maze—on the palm of our hands. From Rio De Jinero to Limpopo, and Cologne to Senegal, the luminous allure of technology has opened exciting new doors for dance music, connected the disconnected dots, and violently humiliated its ethos at times.
