Hikkafest South Coast Weekend

27th – 29th July 2012 /Hikkaduwa/ Sri Lanka

It’s during the long summer vacations in Europe and America in July and August, that Colombo nightlife really awakens from its hibernation. The clubs and bars are swarming with visiting locals currently living abroad, tourists, party-goers and students returning from their respective universities to reunite with their old friends. Tiring quickly of the of the same old choices in the city, these hedonistic gangs eventually head out of town to dance in the sand and play in the sea.

In 2008, while the civil war was still raging in the North and East, a group of young officials at the Sri Lanka Tourist Promotions Bureau with an affinity for electronic music and partying had the idea of reviving the South coast during the dull offseason months of monsoon by organizing a weekend showcasing different styles of music in Hikkaduwa, the back-packers beach hub just 90 km south of Colombo.

The first Hikka Beach Fest attracted over 5000 people over the course of three days with attendees spending time on the beach, enjoying Hikkaduwa’s speciality chocolate or cheese rottis and dancing the night away to a mainstream mix of drummers, bands and both international and local DJs. The festival, with its constantly fluctuating organizational committees does not have much of a reputation for subtle sponsor presence nor for it’s decoration.

However, it has been able to pull in bigger and bigger crowds every year. Since the new Southern Expressway has more than halved the travel time from Colombo to Hikkaduwa (to approximately an hour) it seems logical to predict that the upcoming The hype surrounding Hikkafest has also lead to other event organizers getting active to provide the party-eager crowd with alternatives:

From after-partying at the legendary Mambos in Hikkaduwa, to Colombo House Mafia bringing down Minimize to Riddim Bar in Unawatuna the weekend will no doubt have many dance floors rocking on the fringes of the main event.
