1010: Pippin Hits The Scene
Pippin, really, has been a bit of a mystery. Sure, those who follow India’s indie electronic music scene have long known who the man behind the illustration is. But until now, we’ve only had hints of exactly what sound to expect. Early remixes posted to SoundCloud were compelling, but brought too much of the originals and too little of Pippin’s special sauce. The deep and mellow festival sets hinted at something compelling, but just what we’d get remained a mystery. …
Bangladeshi Artists To Watch Out For In 2014
It seemed like a big challenge to come up with ten new Bangladeshi artists when I started contemplating this feature. For a scene as small as Dhaka, 2013 was a remarkable year for many reasons. It was the first time electronic music workshops took place here – facilitated by Border Movement. It was also the first time this genre of music received a positive reaction with local press showing immense support in response to the few events that were held. As the DES continues to grow every week, here are the favorites for this year. …
The Coalition
Finally a platform that allows creative entrepreneurs a stage to unite. And if anything, with most of us having ‘right-sided’ brains, we could probably do with this platform support the most.
This is The Coalition, a first for India that is acting as a support platform for creative entrepreneurs that includes everything from baking to producing music. The aim is to turn these creative ideas into successful businesses through the help of people with skills in the field and money.
Has India Got The Blues?
When Buddy Guy threw his guitar picks in the audience at the Mahindra Blues Festival in 2012, people went into a frenzy – the moment became a landmark in the musical history of India. However, it wasn’t as remarkable as Metallica’s tour or even The Police who performed at Rang Bhavan. Yes, true, it isn’t right to compare two artists or outfits belonging to entirely different genres but the fact remains – blues still hasn’t gained the foothold that it deserves in this country. There are multiple reasons for this and some of them stay common to the music scene in the country as a whole – the audience interest, artist presentation, frequency et al. But first, let’s try to understand this demographic and how it all started. …

An Evening in Gay Maharashtra
Who could imagine that the perfect tune could be found to the simmering movement of gay rights? It’s a sheer coincidence that singer Suman Sridhar chanced upon ‘An Evening In Gay Maharashtra’ and made it into an anthem. It was July 2013 when Sridhar assembled a band comprising keyboardist F A Talafarlal, drummer Vaibhav Wavikar, Anand Bhagat on congas, and Adrian D’Souza on percussions at the Bandra Base to record this song. The track was shot and recorded in one take and didn’t need editing, she quips. It seems that the time is now right and ripe for the song to become an anthem. …
